Selling Used Car Parts: Your Questions Answered

As one of Ireland’s most established used car parts and car scrappage companies, we’re often asked where we source our car parts.

Most car parts are sourced from cars about to be scrapped. Just because the vehicle as a whole is to be disposed of doesn’t mean that individual parts can’t be salvaged and reused. Reusing parts forms the basis of our commitment to recycling as much of the vehicle as possible. Also, any parts salvaged and made available to our customers are subjected to our rigorous testing procedures to ensure their absolute competency. Today’s blog will look at some of the more valuable parts often salvaged from a scrap car.

Catalytic Converters

Catalytic converters form an essential part of a vehicle’s exhaust system. A combustion engine produces toxic substances such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. These substances are pollutants that are bad for both the environment and human health. Catalytic Converters – naturally enough – convert these pollutants into less harmful substances before they leave the vehicle’s exhaust system. They achieve this feat through a catalytic action of precious metals. Therefore, catalytic converters contain precious materials like rhodium, palladium and platinum. As you might have guessed, it’s the presence of these precious metals that make these converters valuable used car parts.

Batteries

Even if a car battery no longer holds its charge, these used car parts still should always be recycled. Much like catalytic converters, car batteries contain precious materials that are fully recyclable. Batteries are recycled not by being fixed and put back into an engine. Instead, they are broken down into their core components. The elements that make up a battery, i.e., acid lead, cadmium and nickel, can often be extracted and used again in manufacturing.

Radiators

If a car radiator still functions, it can be a valuable used car part. Most used car parts providers will get asked quite a bit about radiators. However, even if the radiator is broken beyond repair, it still contains valuable materials, making it vital to recycle these car parts no matter what condition they are in. For example, car radiators contain a large amount of aluminium, an expensive, fully recyclable metal.

The above is a short condensed list, and in no way is a complete list of all the valuable recyclable car parts available in a vehicle. If you have any additional questions or want to source a used car part, please call our offices today.
